Transplant surgeon Pauline Chen, MD, author of the New York Times best seller Final Exam: A Surgeons Reflections on Mortality (Knopf, 2007), talks with Contemporary Surgery Editor Richard Kirkner about the difficulties surgeons face when dealing with end-of-life issues.

In the book, which was released in paperback this year, Dr. Chen candidly explores the dilemmas that end-of-life issues pose not only to the dying and their physicians, but to patients families as well.

Dr. Chen most recently was on the faculty at UCLA, but has taken a break from surgery to travel the country speaking about end-of-life issues.

The interview was conducted on May 13, 2008.
