Philip R. Schauer, MD, FACS
Director, Bariatric and Metabolic Institute
Professor of Surgery
Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine
Cleveland, OH
The diabetes epidemic in the United States has been well documented: up to 20 million with Type II disease, about 80% of whom are overweight. A body-mass index (BMI) greater than 35 increases the risk for diabetes significantly. Dr Schauer discusses his experiences treating this population with weight-loss surgery, including patient selection and determining what operation is appropriate. Dr Schauer has lectured and authored extensively on minimally invasive and weight-loss surgery. He is also a member of the CONTEMPORARY SURGERY Editorial Board, and Executive Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Symposium, which CONTEMPORARY SURGERY sponsors.
This interview was recorded at SAGES 2008 Surgical Spring Week, held April 9–12, 2008, in Philadelphia, PA.
